Definition of Classic Rock ?

Some people define Classic Rock as "A brand of rock, which fell in between the British Invasion and the insurgence of the 70's acid rock, that was primarily guitar based." Another said, "Classic Rock...that sound which became known as rock-n-roll from the 50s through the 70s." Yet another answered, "It started with the changeover from R & B to Rock, but it wasn't so much the style that changed, as it was the audience." One musician described Classic Rock as not having so much to do with a specific time period, but rather the music itself having a 1-4-5 chord structure, which, he said, is the basis for all Rock and Roll. But Classic Rock can be simply music which does not suck...

Only Rock?

Rock music—or rock'n'roll, as it was once called—is a hybrid, a mix of various musical styles and genres. It blends with other musical styles so easily that it rarely appears as "rock only" and seems prone to mixing; its hybridity is manifest in the readiness with which rock gets hyphenated with other musical forms like jazz rock, blues rock, folk rock, hard rock, soft rock, country rock, southern rock, ethno rock, techno rock, acid rock, psychedelic rock, punk rock, funk rock…

Progressive Rock is...

Progressive Rock music is exactly what it says it is, music that follows traditional Rock music instrumentation for the most part, yet is prepared to take ideas further than the confines of the pop or rock song. Different bands acheive this in a variety of different ways, through either the use and embracement of new technologies, through the use of lyrics that stimulate the imagination and consciousness, through the development of musical themes, the use of different time signatures, dynamics, and arrangements of innovation. Progressive Rock is sometimes "Classical" in sound, sometimes very heavy, it usually relies on the skill of musicians (but not always). It promotes the use of instrumental sections and entire pieces, encourages experimentation.

So, Classic is Classic !

It's true that most Classic Rock was formed and developed in the 60s and 70s, but it's more of a feeling than anything. Maybe the best definition of the classic in Classic Rock as being a descriptive term. Classic, as in vintage, rare, priceless, unforgettable, hard to duplicate. As in a classic car.

And Pop/Rock is...

... a catch-all phrase, referring to nearly any pop music made after rock & roll was absorbed into the pop mainstream. In general, it is melodic, catchy music that relies equally on tightly constructed songs and well-crafted and produced records.
